The Kasauli Rhythm and Blues festival by Genesis Foundation is held annually in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh at the Baikunth Resort. Upcoming as well as already established musicians and artists perform on this platform in support of critically under privileged and orphans who are under the care of Genesis Foundation. It’s a 3-day music extravaganza and the money collected is used as funding by the organization. One can help by simply listening to music!
Genesis foundation’s motto is “we give life a chance”. Genesis Foundation supports critically ill underprivileged and orphan children in the areas of cancer, heart and thalassemia.
I wasn’t staying at Baikunth resort so, I arrived a bit late. The Mizoram-band Frisky Pints with their ever lasting energy, were rocking the stage. Next, the guitarist Ravi Iyer and the tabla master Ustaad Fazal Qureshi and Pandit Ravi Chary created magical contemporary music and left everyone wanting more. After this soothing performance, it was time to notch it up a bit with Mihir Joshi and his band “Mumbai Blues” who gave a rock and roll performance! The open bar helped soothe the audience’s aching throats after this wonderful performance (There were mocktails too, thankfully!)
Now that the sun was long gone and the stars were twinkling in the night sky, it was time to belt out Bollywood songs with the young and sizzling Shilpa Rao. After this sinful performance came DJ Sun with his electrical music who ended the night with a big bang!
My second day at the Kasauli Rhythm began with “Kanchan Daniels and the beard”, who set the stage on fire with their modern blue rock . Then came “The Local Train” with their highly energized rock performance, leaving us all in the end with head rushes because of all the hair flips! They not only played their own compositions but also tracks by Pink Floyd and The Beatles.
As the pink sky with red and yellow hues slowly turned colors, to reveal a black sky, along came the “Massive Vibe” who colored the stage with their multi-national band, striking music, visuals and dance that left us feeling alive! After this “bang bang” performance, the brand ambassador of Genesis foundation, Dia Mirza gave an empowering speech.
And then came the much awaited – Leslie Lewis, he truly was the star of the event, in the end he made sure to get all of us on the dance floor and with his catchy music nobody could resist, and boy did we have fun! We danced, sang and of course clicked loads of selfies…he truly was the grand finale!
There was a Sunday brunch at the Kasuali Club with mouth-watering food. And later on the ceremonial Army jazz band and pipers ended the event.
All the money collected from the tickets, the food court (the variety was vast and the food was brilliant), and from the silent auction (Besides objects placed by the foundation, the bands were generous enough to offer their newest albums as a part of the auction as well. Except for the BMW bikes, all objects had been sold out!)
What to wear
You can bring out the rock and roll in your dress sense and go all out! Hiker boots, leather jackets, spiky bracelets were everywhere! Do not forget to carry an Umbrella as well.
The festival also had open bar counters for the guests. However, only a select few drinks were available which were sponsored by companies supporting the festival.
